Art is one of the rare treasures in life that brings people together, regardless of age, background, or persuasion. This class pursues making big art, masterpieces by some of my favorite masters, tangible and inspiring to little ones. Through the use of Dover Fine Art Stickers, children will get to explore works by an artist. They can choose their favorite piece (sticker) and work toward a recreation in their art book. The sticker will be placed in the upper corner, with the artist’s name copied next to it. The goal of this class is to enjoy famous art, and to be inspired! On the last week of each semester, we’ll have an artists’ exhibit where student’s favorite piece of art is displayed for parents and friends to enjoy.
Optional Materials: Students (okay, parents) may want an art smock. A long sleeve button down worn backwards, a plastic purchased smock, or a child size apron are all helpful options. I prefer the long sleeve smocks for this age because when we wear long sleeve clothing the wrist cuff often gets messy. This should be sent back and forth with the child each time, so that we don’t spend precious art minutes shuffling shirts.
Optional Material: A shallow lipped, box lid or cardboard tin can separator. It is a fact that we will be sending wet art home. More than one lovely work of art has left its mark in a parent’s car on the way home during my years of art teaching. I have found that keeping a paper box lid, or similar box (pick one up at Aldi or Costco) in the vehicle for the purpose of transporting wet art home will save lots of tears and mess. This is just a suggestion, but it’s one I have been thankful for!
