Course Description
This 2 in 1 class is both lecture and lab for Chemistry. 2 grades will be given, one for lecture and one for lab. This year long class is worth 3 high school credits: 2 for the book work and lecture, one for lab.
This is chemistry on your child’s level!
Honor’s credit: Pearson Textbook plus Organic Chemistry lectures and testing
-OR -
Regular high school credit: choose from Friendly Chemistry textbook or Pearson textbook (without Organic Chemistry assignments).
Friendly Chemistry will be tested from Friendly Chemistry books, Pearson textbook users will be tested from Pearson textbook.
Lectures will be online and prerecorded. This enables the students to have access to listen multiple times in a week or semester, and take notes.
I will be available through text or email for questions, but will specifically set aside 30 minutes in class for this.
The classes will be divided up into 3 segments. 9-9:30 will be an open discussion and tutoring time. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about anything in the lectures or text that they didn’t understand. We’ll do some demonstrations during this time that will solidify concepts. Then we’ll do chapter review grading, quizzes, and review of key concepts. We’ll have the rest of class to do our lab and lab sheets. The labs will be the same for all students.
Chemistry Lecture: This is where we take an in depth look and fully develop understanding of key concepts. Each week, I’ll post a link to the recorded lecture. Students will have access to watch the videos as many times as they need.
In Class First Hour: We’ll use games, models and demonstrations to facilitate instruction in a fun, engaging way over too much teacher lead discussion to enjoy this detailed study of the world of chemistry. We’ll jump rope and practice memorization of the periodic table. We’ll learn atomic weights playing Periodic table Battleship. We’ll do lots of model building, too. In-depth topics developed and understood through guided explanation and exploration will provide a solid understanding of our chemical world.
Homework, quizzes, and grades: Cumulative quizzes are given every three weeks rather than all at once at the end, and a final given at the end of each semester. Homework will be graded in class and sent home. Grades on cumulative quizzes and finals may be graded outside of class, handed back the following week, or emailed.
Lab: The lab portion of this class is where we apply all of the learning we’ve been doing! We’ll observe chemistry in action through experiments and models, really seeing how this amazing world absolutely is all about chemistry! We’ll make fantastically messy projects, blow things up (safely), and blast things off. Homemade pop rock candy? Definitely! We’ll make the elements of the universe tangible, through engaging projects, models, and experiments. We’ll engage all those higher order thinking skills through problem solving and lab analysis, make real world connections, and enjoy our interaction with the chemical world. This lab is all hands on, participation, and application!
Objective of this class: Present what is often considered an intimidating subject as a genuinely fun, enjoyable experience, helping students gain a solid foundation in the study of chemistry! The chemistry concepts are NOT watered-down. The concepts are explained in ways that are readily understood by most learners by a passionate, and compassionate teacher. Coupled with these explanations is a host of labs and games which makes the learning concrete and multi-sensory.
Required materials: Composition notebook for labs and homework assignments, pencil, folder, safety glasses, textbook
Choose your level:
- Regular High School credit, especially designed for students with no prior experience with Chemistry: Friendly Chemistry Student Edition: A Guide to Learning Basic Chemistry by Joey A. Hadja and Lisa B. Hadja ISBN 10: 145651136X ISBN 13: 9781456511364
-OR -
- Regular High School Credit and Honors Credit: Pearson Chemistry: The Central Science (13th Edition) by Theodore E. Brown, H. Eugene LeMay, et al. ISBN-13: 978-0321910417 ISBN-10: 0321910419
Time requirements: 4-6 hours per week: Online Lectures, Reading assignments, homework, and chapter reviews are required.
Prerequisite Pearson textbook and Honors: Algebra 1 or currently taking
Prerequisite for Friendly Chemistry: none
Tests and Grades:
Book work and Lecture: Cumulative quizzes are given every three weeks, and a final given at the end of each semester. Homework will be graded in class and sent home. Grades on cumulative quizzes and finals may be graded outside of class, handed back, and results emailed to parents. All are based on the text each student is using; differentiated quizzes and tests.
Pearson textbook students will be required to do math, therefore Algebra 1 is a prerequisite.
Lab: grades will be assessed on participation, completed lab sheet, and quizzes
Expectations: Students will complete readings, lectures, and homework before class. If a class is missed, homework can be graded and checked off the following class. Quizzes can be emailed, done at home, and returned the following week. Redoing the missing lab at home is the responsibility of the parent and student. All work is to be kept in a folder or composition book until end of the semester to refer back to.
