This is biology on your child’s level! Homework is geared to be about 3-4 hours per week; reading the chapter and turning in a weekly chapter assessment. Biology Lecture: This is where we take an in depth look and fully develop understanding of key concepts. We’ll take some notes and explain all the concepts from the week’s reading and engage in lively discussion. The note taking is really gentle, and student collaboration on notes is encouraged! Learning is so much more fun together!
Lab: The lab portion of this class is where we apply all of the learning we’ve been doing! We’ll observe biology in action through experiments and models, really seeing how this amazing world absolutely is full of life! We’ll make fantastically messy projects, dissect specimens, and see ourselves on a cellular level. This lab is all hands on, participation, and application!
There will be a semester 1 final to be given just before the Dec. break and a final given at the end of the year over topics covered in the related semesters. Dissections are a part of the labs, but accommodations can be made ahead of time by the parent if parents do not want students to participate.
Topics covered: Cells and Heredity, Bacteria to Plants, Animals, Human Biology and Health, Ecology
*The topic of evolution does come up during the course (Chapter 5 Prentice Hall) and will be handled carefully. This class is taught from an intelligent design perspective, but we will lightly discuss the key points of creationism and evolution. Any parents having a concern may contact the teacher.
** This course does include a chapter (21 Prentice Hall) on the human reproductive system. This portion of the course will also be handled carefully and respectfully. Parents may contact the teacher with any concerns on this topic as well. Parents are always welcome to sit in on these classes, or chose not to send their students to class during these weeks if they prefer to teach these at home.
