Prairie Adventures on the American Frontier (Sunny Lane 1pm) 1st-5th $100/Semester
In this course, we will step into pioneer life and discover courage, family, and adventure on the American frontier through the beloved stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Why did men move their families to the American frontier? What life-altering effects did common diseases have on people on the prairie in the 1800’s? What happened to homesteaders when the U.S. government put Indian policies in place? These questions and more will be answered as we journey back in time through the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Together, we will follow Laura and her family as they travel across the American frontier, building homes, facing challenges, and discovering the meaning of courage, hard work, and family. Through reading, discussion, creative projects, and hands-on activities, students will explore pioneer life while strengthening their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills.
As we review what happens throughout the books, we will learn bits about history, science, music, geography, health and nutrition of the time. Every week each student will get a topic to research and then they will present their findings in class. If time allows, we may watch some snippets of the show and compare the differences between it to the books. I can’t wait to share with you books that bring history and storytelling to life in a way that sparks imagination and builds a love of reading.
