Timeless Words: Classic Literature (Sunny Lane 1pm) 9th-12th $100/Semester
The focus of the class is on understanding the books and thinking about what they mean to us. The main homework will be reading and discussion. Students are expected to read in advance of the class and be prepared to comment on the readings in every class period. We will discuss in detail and seek to relate the readings to our lives. At the end of each semester each student will be expected to present their thoughts on the readings, either as an oral presentation or the class or as a written paper.
First Semester books: Onion John by Joseph Krumgold, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, & The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Second Semester books: The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle, The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine I'Engle
Through guided discussion and thoughtful instruction, students will be trained in literary analysis, learning how to:
-Identify themes and symbolism
-Analyze character development
-Interpret figurative language
-Understand historical and cultural context
-Write clear, analytical essays
Grades will be based on homework completion, active participation in class discussions, and formal written papers throughout the semester. This class counts as highschool credit.
