Explore Western music sounds, composers, and history.

This class includes listening to great Western music, while learning historical context and some music terms and symbols. No music experience required. Homework will include researching composers, defining music terms, and listening to classical music online (free through Youtube). There will be no papers to write; there will be a quiz on music terms. Research on composers will be presented verbally in class unless you arrange to write it out and submit it. The objective is to expose students to a wide range of Western music; it will not be comprehensive; rather, I aim for a taste of many greats. Some examples are: Beethoven, J. S. Bach, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Louis Armstrong, Scott Joplin, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Stravinsky, Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Henry Mancini, John Williams.

This counts as a high school elective, as a music humanities class for non-music majors.
